Q. No device is available to install an authenticator app, such as a smartphone or tablet. If an authenticator app is not used, what methods can be used to set up multi-factor authentication?
A. Set up Multi-Factor Authentication using your phone number and email address. Please follow the steps below to configure multi-factor authentication.
*From January 2025, the name "Microsoft 365" was changed to "Microsoft 365 Copilot".
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Copilot Home.
- Enter your THERS account (@f.thers.ac.jp, @s.thers.ac.jp, @a.thers.ac.jp) and click "Next".
- Enter your THERS account password and click "Sign in".
- Click "Next".

Click "Set up a different way to sign in".
- From the "Add a sign-in method" window, select "Phone".

Enter the "Country code" and "Phone number", select "Text a code", and click "Next". If you are setting up a landline, please select "Call".
If you select "Text a code", you will authenticate using a code sent via SMS to your smartphone or mobile phone.

When "Let’s prove you’re human" appears, accurately enter the eight characters shown in the image in the center of the dialog box. (Please note that the characters are case-sensitive.)
*If the image is difficult to read, you can change it by clicking "New image", or use "Audio" to listen to the characters. -
A six-digit code will then be sent via SMS to your smartphone or mobile phone. Enter the six-digit code and click "Next".

When the registration completion screen appears, click "Done".
If you select "Call", you will receive an automated voice call. Please follow the voice instructions to complete the authentication. -
When the registration completion screen appears, click "Next".
- Click "Set up a different way to sign in" at the bottom left of the screen.
- From the "Add a sign-in method" window, select "Email".
- Enter an email address where you can receive messages.
THERS email address(e.g., @mail.f.thers.ac.jp, @s.gifu-u.ac.jp, @s.mail.nagoya-u.ac.jp, @mail.a.thers.ac.jp) cannot be used. Additionally, when recovering your THERS account password (SSPR), authentication via email address is not available.
- A six-digit code is sent to the entered email address. Enter the six-digit code on the code entry screen and click "Next".
- Upon successful authentication, two authentication methods registered as the "Set up complete" are displayed. After confirming the authentication methods, click "Done".
- Change the initial password.
For the current password field, enter the initial password.
For the new password and confirmation fields, enter a desired password.
After completing all fields, click "Sign in".

- Select either "Send SMS" or "Call".

- If you select "Send SMS", enter the six-digit code received via SMS on the code entry screen and click "Verify".
- On the "Stay signed in?" screen, select "Yes".
Selecting "Yes" will keep the sign-in status active for a certain period (approximately 90 days).

Once signed in to the Microsoft 365 Copilot Home, the reconfiguration of multi-factor authentication is complete.
